Chris "Kid" Andersen – Norway’s Blues Guitar Virtuoso

Chris "Kid" Andersen is a Norwegian-born blues guitarist, producer, and bandleader whose musical journey has made him a cornerstone of the West Coast blues scene. Born in Telemark, Norway, in 1980, Andersen developed a passion for blues at an early age, drawing inspiration from legends like Otis Rush, Buddy Guy, Junior Watson, and the Kings (B.B., Albert, and Freddie). By the age of 18, he was already performing with American blues artists visiting Norway, including Homesick James, Nappy Brown, and Willie “Big Eyes” Smith
From Norway to the U.S. Blues Scene
In 2001, at the age of 21, Andersen moved to the United States to immerse himself in the rich blues tradition. He joined blues frontman Terry Hanck's band, quickly establishing himself as a prominent figure on the West Coast blues circuit. His exceptional talent caught the attention of blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite, leading to a stint in Musselwhite's band. During this period, Andersen contributed to the acclaimed album Delta Hardware, which won a Blues Music Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album
Rick Estrin & The Nightcats
In 2008, when Little Charlie Baty retired from touring, Andersen stepped in as the guitarist for Rick Estrin & The Nightcats. His dynamic playing and stage presence revitalized the band, earning them widespread acclaim. Andersen's contributions to the band's sound have been instrumental in their continued success.
Greaseland Studios: A Hub for Blues Production
Beyond his performance career, Andersen is a highly sought-after producer. In 2006, he founded Greaseland Studios in San Jose, California, which has become a renowned facility for blues recordings. Andersen approaches the studio as a musical instrument, emphasizing the importance of capturing the authentic energy of live performances. Over the years, Greaseland has hosted recordings for a diverse array of artists, including Elvin Bishop, Tommy Castro, Diunna Greenleaf, and Rick Estrin & The Nightcats .
Personal Life
Andersen is married to Lisa Leuschner Andersen, a finalist from the third season of American Idol. Together, they have collaborated musically, including the 2024 release of their double album Spirits & Soul, which features both of their performances.
